  Revive stale-smelling sponges
Geschrieben von: samaa - 13.03.2018, 21:58 - Forum: off-topic - Keine Antworten

Revive stale-smelling sponges
Soak these kitchen staples in baking soda and water to freshen them up so you can use them a little longer. But remember, you should still toss your sponges every two to three weeks, depending on use.

7. Deodorize musty upholstery
Banish smells from the soft, cushy places around your house by sprinkling surfaces with baking soda, letting it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuuming it up. "You can also use this method to freshen up your mattress between cleanings," says Forte.

8. De-stink pet beds
The same goes for Spot's favorite place to sleep! Sprinkle, wait 15 minutes and vacuum.

9. Give new life to old toys
Naturally fight the effects of your little one's grubby hands by wiping them with a sponge dipped in a baking soda and water solution.

10. Scrub a crayon-covered wall
And when your kid's artistic efforts end up all over that wall you just repainted, scrub lightly with a damp sponge sprinkled in baking soda.

11. Banish mildew from bathrooms
Scrub your tub, tile, sink and shower curtain with a damp sponge and baking soda. Rinse to reveal gleaming surfaces.

Cleaning Problems

Sure, it's an essential for grandma's amazing chocolate chip cookies, but baking soda also has the power to freshen and clean seemingly countless spots in your home. It's a super-effective (but gentle) abrasive and is a great natural deodorizer, so it's helpful in all sorts of cleaning emergencies.

1. Remove stains from plastic food containers
Leftovers have a way of leaving their mark. To freshen your containers, wipe with a clean sponge sprinkled with baking soda. Or erase tough stains by soaking in a solution of four tablespoons of baking soda and a quart of warm water. If that doesn't work, we recommend investing in these containers.

2. Refresh a foul-smelling fridge
Never worry that last night's salmon will leave your fridge smelling, well, fishy for months to come again. Baking soda will absorb strong food odors so they don't linger or change the taste of neighboring foods.

3. Clean store-bought fruits and veggies
Mixed with water, baking soda can remove dirt and that waxy coating that comes on produce from the supermarket.

4. Scrub down kitchen surfaces
Nearly every dirty spot in your kitchen can benefit from a baking soda treatment. Combine it with water to clean countertops, stainless steel sinks, microwaves, range hoods and cooking utensils.

5. Deep-clean extra greasy dishes and pans
Give baked-on food the one-two punch by dialing up your dish soap with a sprinkle of baking soda. "Hot water soak, mildly abrasive baking soda, a scrub sponge and some elbow grease is all you need to dissolve stuck-on grease," says Carolyn Forte, director of the Cleaning Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute.

How to Remove Paint From Everything Else
Upholstery
Scrape off excess paint. Mix a solution of one part liquid hand dishwashing detergent to one part cool water. Sponge the stain with the detergent solution, tamping it vigorously. Rinse and repeat until no more paint is removed. If the stain remains, try blotting with acetone.

Carpet
Scrape off excess paint and, starting at the outer edge of the stain, apply acrylic paint and varnish remover. Gently scrape away the paint as it softens. Repeat, using the remover sparingly, until you have removed as much paint as possible. Be careful to keep the paint and varnish remover from spreading the stain. "Otherwise you may create a bigger stain," warns Forte. To avoid this, work on the individual tufts, carefully applying the remover and working it in so it doesn't spread to the surrounding tufts.

If any paint remains, work glycerin into the stain and let it soak for several hours. Sponge the stain with a mild solution of liquid hand dishwashing detergent to one part cool water. Blot until the liquid is absorbed. Sponge with a solution of one part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Blot until the liquid is absorbed. Sponge with cold water and blot dry.

Now that you know how to fix stains, learn how to dispose of or donate your leftover paint after you finish your project.

Get Paint Out of Clothes

If you accidentally spill paint on your shirt or pants, don't panic: We asked Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, how to get this tricky stain out of your belongings. The most important thing she says is to treat paint stains as quickly as you can, because once the paint dries, the stain may be impossible to remove.

Another thing to keep in mind: while some materials may be able to stand up to these stain treatments, more fragile ones, like silk, may be permanently damaged. To make sure your cleaning products and method are a match with the material, spot test them first. At the first sign of color bleeding or fading, stop what you're doing and accept the sad fate of your garment. And next time, please, oh, please, wear a smock.

Latex or Water-Based Paint
Good news: "Fresh latex paint washes out quickly," says Forte. But if it's dry, start by scraping off excess paint. Working from the back of the fabric, vigorously flush the stain under warm running water. Mix a solution of one part dish soap, like Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid Dish Soap ($2, amazon.com), to one part warm water. Sponge the stain with the detergent solution, tamping it vigorously. Rinse and repeat this process until no more paint is removed. If the stain remains, try blotting with acetone. Caution: Do not use acetone on fabrics containing acetate or triacetate — it will melt these fibers!

Oil-Based Paint
If the stain is dry, soften it by treating it with the product the paint manufacturer recommends for thinning the paint (check the paint can's label). If the paint is wet, scrape off excess, then use a clean white cloth to blot up as much paint as possible. Rinse, but don't let the fabric dry. Place the stain face down on a stack of white paper towels or cloths. Blot with turpentine, like Winsor & Newton Distilled Turpentine ($13, amazon.com). Tamp the stain to help break up the paint. Repeat, replacing the paper towels or cloth until no more paint can be removed. Treat the remaining stain with liquid hand dishwashing soap and soak overnight. Rinse well and launder. If the stain remains, treat with a prewash stain remover, like Shout Advanced Gel ($14 for a 3-pack, amazon.com), and launder again.

Flush the spot with warm water, then sponge it with a solution of one part dishwashing liquid soap and one part warm water. Repeat as necessary, then rinse and launder.

Even though pizza is the ultimate comfort food on a Friday night, it's also messy and often the culprit behind life's worst grease stains. If you need to get grease out of clothes, couch cushions or, any other beloved item, use this advice from Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab.

Clothes
Pretreat with a prewash stain remover, like Shout Advanced Gel ($13 for a 3-pack, amazon.com). Launder, using the hottest water safe for the fabric. "Don't let the stain sit while you're at work," says Forte. "This pretreater is safe to use up to several days before wash day."

Upholstery
Scrape off excess grease. Sprinkle baking soda, corn starch, or other absorbent on the stain. Let it stand 10 to 15 minutes, then vacuum. Using a clean white cloth, sponge the stain with a dry-cleaning solvent, like Guardsman Professional Strength Dry Cleaning Fluid ($50, amazon.com). Blot until the solvent is absorbed. Repeat until the stain disappears.

Carpets
Use the same method as you would for upholstery. If the stain remains, mix one tablespoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent, like Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid Dish Soap ($2, amazon.com), and one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. Sponge the stain with this solution. Blot until the liquid is absorbed. Sponge with cold water and blot dry to remove the detergent/vinegar solution.

Stepping into the bathtub and noticing that your shower curtain is dotted with mildew can make your skin crawl. But we have good news: "There's no need to throw away your shower curtain once it's dirty," says Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab. Depending on the material, use the following advice on how to clean a shower curtain.

Plastic or vinyl
Wash the curtain on the highest water level with detergent like Good Housekeeping Seal holder Gain Liquid Detergent Original ($6, amazon.com). Add two to three bath towels for extra cleaning agitation, then hang it to dry or put in the dryer on low heat or fluff only.

Fabric
This may include cotton, nylon, polyester or hemp materials. If your shower curtain is made of one of these fabrics, or is decorative, it's best to wash it following the instructions on its care label.

Prevent mildew
To extend how frequently you have to clean your curtain, always open the bathroom door after showering to allow moisture out. Opening a window and turning on the exhaust fan while showering will also help moisture dissipate. And don't forget to stretch the shower curtain open either. "A couple extra minutes of work can really minimize cleaning time in the long-run," says Forte.

5. Grease cleaner
What you'll need:

1/2 cup sudsy ammonia ($12, amazon.com) mixed with enough water to fill a one-gallon container.
Sudsy ammonia, which has detergent in it, helps remove tough grime. Clean your oven hoods and grills by dipping a sponge or mop into the solution and wiping over the surface, then rinse with clear water.

One part white non-gel toothpaste ($7 for 2, amazon.com)
One part baking soda
Places you've accidentally left a water ring (but not on unfinished wood, lacquer, or antiques), dampen a cloth with water, add the toothpaste mixture, and rub with the grain to buff over the spot. Then take a dry cloth and wipe off. Use another soft cloth for a final shine. Polish as you normally would.

7. Last-resort clothing stain remover
What you'll need:

1 gallon hot water
1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent ($7, amazon.com)
1 cup regular liquid chlorine bleach ($9, amazon.com), not ultra or concentrate
Treat badly stained washable or bleach-able garments by mixing the above ingredients into a stainless steel, plastic, or enamel bowl (not aluminum). Soak garment for 15 to 20 minutes. If stain is still there, let it soak a bit longer, then wash the item as usual.

8. Marble cleaner
What you'll need:

A drop or two of mild dishwashing liquid ($6, amazon.com), non-citrus-scented
2 cups warm water
Mix the detergent and water the next time you want to clean natural stone countertops. Sponge over marble and rinse completely to remove any soap residue. Buff with a soft cloth; do not let the marble air-dry. Caution: Never use vinegar, lemon, or any other acidic cleaner on marble or granite surfaces; it will eat into the stone.

Some of the items in your pantry (like baking soda and vinegar) are effective cleaners and, even better, inexpensive. So the next time you have guests coming over, but you're out of your favorite cleaning product, don't run to the store — try one of these standbys instead.

Safety tip: Never combine ammonia-based cleaners with chlorine bleach or products containing bleach, such as powdered dishwasher detergent. The fumes they'll create are extremely dangerous. Before doing any mixing, read the product labels first.

1. Brass cleaner
What you'll need:

White vinegar or lemon juice
Table salt
To clean non-lacquered cabinet pulls, bathroom appointments, and more, dampen a sponge with vinegar or lemon juice, then sprinkle on salt. Lightly rub over surface. Rinse thoroughly with water, then immediately dry with a clean soft cloth.

2. All-purpose cleaner and deodorizer
What you'll need:

4 tablespoons baking soda
1 quart warm water
To clean kitchen counters, appliances, and the inside of your refrigerator, all you need is baking soda. "It makes a great deodorizer and can be used to shine stainless steel sinks and appliances," says Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab. Just pour the above solution on a clean sponge and wipe.

2 cups water
1/2 cup white or cider vinegar
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol 70% concentration ($6, amazon.com)
1 to 2 drops of orange essential oil ($9, amazon.com) for smell (optional)
The next time you need to wash your windows and mirrors, combine these ingredients and pour them in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on a paper towel or soft cloth first, then on the glass. Hint: Don't clean windows on a hot, sunny day, because the solution will dry too quickly and leave lots of streaks.

  cleaning your mattress

cleaning your mattress
If you haven't thought about cleaning your mattress lately, consider this: You probably spend six or seven hours on it every night. During that time, dead skin cells, sweat and oil from your body make their way onto it. That's why Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, recommends following this advice every few months to keep your bed fresh.

1. Ditch the dust.
The easiest way to tackle dust is to use the upholstery tool on your vacuum cleaner to go over the top and sides of the mattress and as much of the box spring as you can access. Press firmly on the tool to draw out dust beneath the fabric's surface. Then use the crevice tool to get into the quilting, along the edge welting and where any pillow top is attached. If you have a garment steamer, go over the mattress with the steamer before you vacuum to help kill and remove dust mites lurking near the surface.

2. Wipe out old stains.
If pets sleep with you, or you like to snack in bed, chances are your mattress may have some stains on it. The easiest way to remove them is with an upholstery cleaner formulated to remove pet stains, like Good Housekeeping Seal-holder Bissell Pet Stain and Odor Remover ($19, amazon.com). "They not only remove stains but also contain enzymes to tackle odors," Forte says. Avoid over-wetting the mattress, and let it dry thoroughly before making the bed.

3. Kill any odors.
For any telltale smells, spray the mattress and box spring with a disinfecting spray, like Lysol ($7, amazon.com). It's safe to use on fabric and kills bacteria that causes odors. To freshen your mattress between cleanings, sprinkle some Arm & Hammer Baking Soda ($12 for a 4-pack, amazon.com) onto the fabric, wait 15 minutes and vacuum.

Now that you know your mattress is clean, make sure your pillows and mattress pad are dust- and odor-free too. And watch out for these mistakes you might be making when you wash your sheets.

The first step when it comes to dusting is knowing which tools you should and shouldn't use. For instance, feather dusters are far from helpful, according to Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab: "This tool simply spreads dust from one surface to another." Instead, you can more successfully capture dust with a soft cloth dampened with water, a microfiber duster, or an electrostatic duster. Now that you have your tools, here are targeted strategies for your home's most hard-to-reach spots.

Walls
For ceiling-to-floor cleaning, a vacuum with multiple attachments is the most efficient tool. Work from the top down to capture the most dust without making a mess.

Baseboards
You can tackle dingy spots using a wet cloth. Lightly spray it with water or an all-purpose cleaning solution, like Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner Trigger ($7, amazon.com) and run it over baseboards to whisk debris away in a flash.

Curio cabinets
To get at dust trapped in tiny nooks and intricate carvings, use a clean natural-bristle paint or makeup brush, then wipe with a microfiber cloth ($5 for 3, amazon.com).

Electronics
Computers, TVs, DVD players, stereos, and printers are notorious dust magnets. Always unplug the equipment before cleaning. A gentle swipe with a microfiber cloth usually does the job, while a soft, long-handled brush ($3, amazon.com) will collect dust from crevices. Be sure to vacuum dust from around cords and vents because, along with pet hair, it can clog machines or outlets.

how to dust
Getty
Soft toys
Put beanbag critters, teddy bears, or fabric dolls into a large plastic bag with a cup of baking soda. Secure the top, then take the items outside and shake well. The baking soda and static will draw out the soil and dust. Remove items one at a time, shake off the clumps of baking soda, and vacuum the rest using a brush attachment.
http://sites.over-blog.com/2018/02/-7.html
http://sites.over-blog.com/2018/02/-2.html
Behind appliances
Over time, crumbs, grease, and other debris accumulate behind your stove and refrigerator, providing a food source for insects and other pests. If possible, move the appliance out from the wall and unplug. Use a long-handled, slightly damp sponge mop ($12, amazon.com) to lift dust from the back of the appliance, then wipe floor and walls with hot soapy water.

https://getpocket.com/a/queue/
Vents
Remove heavy dust from ceiling, floor, or appliance vents with a soft-brush vacuum attachment or electrostatic mop ($16, amazon.com), then dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe the surface. Rinse removable, washable air-conditioning filters well in hot soapy water and air-dry before reinstalling.

Ceiling fans
Place newspaper or a drop cloth under the ceiling fan. Turn off the power source, then get on a step stool. Use damp paper towels to wipe greasy dust from the casing and a soft-bristle brush dampened with a mild cleanser, like Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid Dish Soap ($2, amazon.com) to loosen the dust on the blades, then rinse with a damp paper towel.

http://washing-sofas.myfreesites.net/blog

Since you rest your head on your pillow every night, you want it to be clean. The first step: checking the content and care label to figure out what's inside. Once you figure that out, use this advice from Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, to revive your pillow and help make it last longer. Talk about a win-win!

Down and fiberfill
Good news: You can toss these pillows in your washer. We recommend laundering two at a time, to keep the washer balanced, and using a front- or top-loading machine without an agitator — a.k.a. the large spindle found in the middle of some machines, designed to help rotate water and clothes. If an agitator-style top loader is your only option, place the pillows in the tub vertically, so it's less likely they'll get wrapped around and damaged by the agitator.

If your pillow has a care label, read it and follow the directions. If it doesn't, or you clipped off the tag, use warm water and opt for the gentle cycle, then add on an extra cold water rinse and spin cycle. Tumble the pillows dry on low heat, fluffing and turning them often. "In the Good Housekeeping Institute, we toss in a few rubber dryer balls, like Nellie's ($14 for a 2-pack, amazon.com), to help plump the filling and keep it from clumping as it dries," says Forte.

Feather
This is another machine-friendly filler — just make sure there are no slits or tears in the pillow cover. For balance, load two pillows at a time and use only a small amount of detergent. We recommend Good Housekeeping Seal holder Gain Liquid Detergent ($43 for a 2-pack, amazon.com). Set the machine on the delicate cycle and give the pillows a second rinse.
http://cleaning-curtains-and-sofas.myfreesites.net

http://cleaning-curtains-and-sofas.myfre...et/contact

For drying, place them in the machine with several clean tennis balls, which will aid in the fluffing process. It's also a good idea to take them out periodically and fluff by hand, using your fingers to break up any clumps. Pillows will take longer to dry than a normal load of clothes. If they have a musty smell, set them in the sun for a couple of hours.

Foam
Unfortunately, you can't put these pillows in the washing machine, but if there's a removable cover, you can wash that according to the care instructions on the tag. To remove dust from a foam pillow, vacuum both sides with the upholstery tool. If possible, dial down the suction level to make the job a bit easier to do.

Another option: Tumble the pillow in the dryer on the no heat or air-only cycle for 20 minutes. Spot clean any soiled areas with a cloth dipped in a mild sudsy soap solution. Rinse with a damp cloth. Allow the pillow to air dry completely before putting it back on the bed. Some foam pillows include instructions for hand washing. If you choose to follow them, be very gentle. Wet foam is heavy and tears easily.

When to replace
No matter how diligent you are about cleaning your pillows, you'll need to buy new ones eventually. But how do you know when it's time to toss? "If you fold the pillow in half, and it doesn't spring back into shape, plan for a shopping trip," says Forte. To help pillows stay cleaner for longer, use liners under your pillowcases and wash them monthly.
