5 Materials You Shouldn't Use Fabric Softener On

5 Materials You Shouldn't Use Fabric Softener On
Whether you use liquid fabric softener or dryer sheets, these products soften fibers to help reduce wrinkles, diminish static cling and add a bit of fragrance to your laundry. But using them on certain materials can actually have a negative effect on fibers. Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, says to read the care label before adding it to your rinse cycle — and think twice about using fabric softener on these five materials.

1. Microfiber
What's great about microfiber is that its intricate threads have the ability to trap dust and absorb spills. However, if you toss it in the wash with fabric softener, you could end up destroying their effectiveness.

2. Sportswear
Many types of athletic wear have wicking technology to absorb sweat from your skin and keep you cool when you're working out. If you use fabric softener on these garments, it'll leave a coating that will prevent them from well, wicking.

3. Towels
While everyone loves to dry off with a soft towel, liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets can reduce the absorbency of terry cloth and other fluffy fabrics. If you feel like your towels aren't drying as well as they did when they were new, skip the softener every few washes.

  How to Clean Brass

How to Clean Brass

Tarnished brass can take any otherwise lovely piece and make it look old and dingy. That's why it's important to always keep supplies around that will restore your brass to its original gleam. However, how you clean your metal depends on whether it's lacquered or not.

The best way to polish brass that's lacquered is to simply wipe it with a soft, damp cloth — do not use any kind of household cleaner. If it's non-lacquered, Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, recommends using Good Housekeeping Seal holder Weiman Brass Polish ($9, amazon.com).

If you're in a pinch, you can also try any of the following ideas that will also clean brass quite easily.

1. Ketchup
Squirt a dollop of ketchup on a rag and rub over the surface. Wipe off the residue with a damp cloth and buff dry.

2. Vinegar
Dissolve 1 teaspoon salt in 1/2 cup vinegar and add enough flour to make a paste. Rub onto the brass and leave for 10 minutes, then rinse and buff dry.

3. Lemon
Squeeze half of a lemon onto a sponge and sprinkle salt on top. Rub over the sponge over the surface and then rinse it off. The results are pretty amazing:

How to Clean Grout
Every week, or as needed, mix 3/4 cup household chlorine bleach with 1 gallon water. Wearing rubber gloves and eye protection, use a stiff brush to apply the formula to one small area at a time. Be careful not to let the liquid spatter onto surrounding surfaces. Let it sit for several minutes, then scrub and rinse. Or try CLR Fresh Scent Bath and Kitchen Cleaner ($15, amazon.com), which is Forte's go-to product. Just spray the solution onto the tile and wipe clean.

How to Maintain
To prevent dingy shower grout in the future, run a squeegee on the tile after you're done bathing. Moisture can lead to mildew stains, so the drier you keep your bathroom, the less you'll have to clean it. Opening a window, turning on the exhaust fan while showering and leaving the door open will also help it dissipate. And don't forget to stretch the shower curtain open either. "A couple extra minutes of work can really minimize cleaning time in the long-run," says Forte.

Now that your grout is clean again, try these tips to help keep your bathroom clean for longer.

  How to Clean Hardwood Floors
Geschrieben von: samaa - 13.03.2018, 22:17 - Forum: User helfen Usern - Keine Antworten

How to Clean Hardwood Floors
Every one to two months, wet-clean surface-treated wood floors, using Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner Spray. Simply spray a small 3-foot by 3-foot area with the cleaner and go over it with the microfiber mop to pick up the dissolved dirt. Work your way around the floor, cleaning one area at a time.

When you see a light scuff, buff it out with a sock or a clean, fuzzy tennis ball. To remove heavier scuffs, apply a little baking soda to a damp cloth and gently rub the mark until it disappears. Rinse with a damp paper towel and buff dry. However, once floors start to look worn, it's time to refinish them and call in a professional.

To reduce the number of times you have to wet-clean your floors, follow this advice.

how to clean hardwood floors

3 Common Hardwood Floor Mistakes
1. Wearing your shoes at home
"I am a firm believer in taking my shoes off as soon as I come in the door, because this simple act goes a long way to eliminating virtually all of the tracked-in dirt that can wreak havoc on a wood floor's finish," says Forte. Dirt and grit are abrasive and over time these particles leave behind fine scratches that make your floors look dull.

2. Not vacuuming often enough
Nothing removes dirt and fine debris from the cracks and crevices of a wood floor like a good vacuum cleaner. The best choice is a canister vacuum with its long, oval floor brush attached. "If you only have an upright model, be sure to turn off the rotating brush to keep the bristles from scratching your floors," says Forte.

3. Waiting too long to clean up spills
Spills will happen, but if you let them dry on the floor they'll dull the finish and attract additional dirt. Blot spills immediately with an absorbent cloth. "The worst thing you can do is let water puddle on the floor," says Forte. Follow up with a damp paper towel to remove any residue and buff dry.

  How to Clean a Sponge
Geschrieben von: samaa - 13.03.2018, 22:16 - Forum: User helfen Usern - Keine Antworten

How to Clean a Sponge
No one likes the idea of cleaning dishes with a germy sponge, which is why we all know we should be cleaning ours on the regular. But which method is best? The Good Housekeeping Institute worked with EMSL Analytical testing lab in Westmont, New Jersey to find out if using the dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, bleach, or vinegar removed the most bacteria — and bleach won.

The Best Way to Clean a Sponge
Mix 3/4 cup of bleach in one gallon of water and soak the sponge for five minutes, then rinse – and that's it. In testing, the bleach solution killed 99.9% of the three bacteria strains from the test sponges (scrub and regular cellulose), which is the benchmark based on the EPA's requirement for sanitization of non-food-contact surfaces.

But no matter how diligent you are about cleaning, your kitchen sponges won't last forever. Clean them weekly, and toss shabby ones every two to three weeks, depending on use.

3 Other Ways to Clean a Sponge
Even though bleach is the most effective bacteria killer, in a bind, these methods are your next best option. They're listed in order from most to least effective, so choose wisely.
http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/cle...-a-sponge/
1. Microwave
The microwave was one of the next most effective, zapping 99.9% of germs. Do this by putting the sponge in the microwave, saturating it in water (we used 1/4 cup for scrub sponges and 1/2 cup for cellulose), then heating it on high for one minute (scrub) or two minutes (cellulose).

2. Dishwasher
The dishwasher also killed 99.9% of germs. To use, add your sponge to a regular dishwasher load, using the "heated dry" setting.

3. Vinegar
This method eliminated 99.6% of bacteria. All you have to do is soak your sponge in full-strength vinegar for five minutes, then rinse.

Clean Hardwood Floors

Everyone thinks wood floors are delicate and require special TLC, but nothing could be further from the truth. Get Rid of Bed Bugs

The resurgence of these insects in American homes has caused many a sleepless night — but not everything you hear is true. Here's everything you need to know to identify and get rid of these nasty insects.

5 Things You Need to Accept First
Before you start pointing fingers at the reasons your home is infested or why you do — or don't — have a bedbugs problem, you need to know this.

1. Bedbugs don't care if you home is neat or messy.
They only care that their food source, a.k.a. people, are nearby. There's also no evidence they transmit diseases. The real threat: Itchy red bites.

2. Most people wrongly identify these critters.
Entomologist Richard Pollack, Ph.D., has found fewer than 10% of the critters people identify as bedbugs actually are; that's also why he doesn't trust websites that list reports of bedbugs at hotels.

3. You should contact a professional ASAP.
"The biggest mistake people make is waiting too long to call for help, because the longer the problem goes on, the bigger of a chance they'll spread within the home and even outside of the home," says David Dunham of Go Green Bedbug Dogs. He says the first sign your home is infested is if you get bites.

4. Not everyone has skin reaction to bedbug bites.
Surprising, we know. "It's common for one person to become the host or the person getting all the bites, while their spouse or partner will get no bites at all," says Dunham. "Usually the person not getting bites will discredit their partner's concerns. But if you wake up with numerous bites, especially under your clothes, it could be bedbugs."

5. Traveling isn't the only way to pick them up.
They can easily be carried into the house on secondhand furniture, so inspect such items very carefully. Encasement products can also prevent bugs that do make it inside from hunkering down inside crevices of mattresses and box springs. But while reports of bedbugs at movie theaters and in retail stores have made headlines, it's rare that someone actually brings them home, says Gangloff-Kaufmann.

Here's How to Get Rid of Them

They're baacckk. Creepy-crawly stink bugs are currently infesting homes across the country, expelling pungent fumes whenever anyone inadvertently squashes the aptly named pests. The fall marks their annual migration into rural houses where they seek warm shelter, but the insects are now appearing in larger droves than ever before.

"They're coming off a feeding frenzy and they're congregating in homes they haven't been in all summer, ready to hibernate," Peter Jentsch, director of the Hudson Valley Research Laboratory, told the Times Union. "The next six weeks are going to be mayhem."

Howard Russell, an entomologist from Michigan State University, agrees. "If you're seeing a few now, you're going to see them by the dozens — maybe even hundreds — as we get closer toward the end of October," he told WZZM. "And it won't stop."

Native to Asia, brown marmorated stink bugs only arrived in the United States in the mid '90s, but now appear in 44 states. They usually live outside in warmer weather, plaguing farms and orchards by eating their crops. As the temperature drops, the agricultural pests gravitate towards protected buildings to overwinter until spring, when they become active once again.

While the insects don't bite, sting or carry diseases, any homeowner who's experienced a scourge before knows why they're so unwelcome. Their eponymous self-defense habit makes disposal almost impossible. Squash the bugs, and they stink. Vacuum the bugs, and then the vacuum stinks. Basically, they stink.

Like most other household pests, experts agree it's best to prevent an infestation before it starts by blocking off as many potential entryways as possible. First check doors, windows, attics and crawl spaces for cracks and torn screens, Orkin advises. Use caulk to plug small gaps, weather stripping to seal exterior doors and screens to block off vents. Some homeowners claim that rubbing screens with fragrant dryer sheets will also reduce an invasion by up to 80%, according Bayer Advanced.

If the bugs have already found their way indoors, use a dustpan to sweep them up and into the toilet instead of squishing. You can also vacuum stink bugs and dispose of the bag immediately to help reduce the odor. Another method is drowning via soapy water. Just choose a straight-sided container so they can't climb out.
